Felton Kizer & Maxime Magnon “Metisse” Rosé
Felton Kizer is a force. Originally a photographer, he founded Yes Off-Kilter, a media company focused on contemporary art and culture. At the time of this recording they were responsible for four distinct print publications. Since then he’s co founded a coffee company and a stock photo archive. Felton and I opened a bottle of rosé this September and talked about how he pivoted his heaviest publication, Kizer Quarterly, whose finished upcoming issue was devoted to food and beverage, towards something he felt his community would find more useful as restaurants closed their doors during the pandemic. The pitfalls of the lack of diversity in publishing, the upside of being overlooked and rosé all come up along the way.
During our Conversation we drank the delicious and luxuriously rich Maxime Magnon “Metisse” rosé from Corbieres. Corbieres is a great place to look for value but it does take a bit of research to sort through the producers and find the handful who have decided to eschew conventional farming and vinification methods. Not the typical Poolside rose, This wine comes from the steep hills far inland of the Mediterranean coast, and is a great way to both be reminded of the sun to come while still matching the heavier fare we lean on for comfort in colder months.
I recommend checking out Felton’s work across his array of social media platforms for a similar reminder. For me, the energy, tone and form of his images often recall something akin to winter in a perpetually sun soaked landscape. It was a pleasure to get to spend some time with him. Enjoy!
